My Story

I want to start by saying that bowel cancer is a truly horrible diseoxase which affects both men and women almost equally. It is the second leading killer behind lung cancer - but one of the most curable types IF DETECTED EARLY ENOUGH!
A few years ago my father had a close call with bowel cancer. Luckily he was proactive about going to the doctor with his symptoms and it was caught early. Initially treatment worked, but the cancer has since came back twice - each time in his liver. Thankfull...

A few years ago my father had a close call with bowel cancer. Luckily he was proactive about going to the doctor with his symptoms and it was caught early. Initially treatment worked, but the cancer has since came back twice - each time in his liver. Thankfully, again it was caught early and treatments have been successful.
However, my mate Dean was not so fortunate. He lost his battle with bowel cancer on the 21st of July 2013 - he was only 26 years old. In honour of him our team "Deano's bearded stallions" was formed.
So my aim with this page is not only to raise much needed money, but awareness in the hope that maybe another family, another friend - EVEN YOU, may be spared the absolute terror and heartbreak of this disease.
So I will part with saying that if something does not feel right - please do not dismiss it, do not put it off because you are busy or embarrassed - see your doctor immediately!!
And please remember to donate if you can, big or small it all makes a difference.

Dean Maynard was one of the funniest, kind and best people that we have ever had the pleasure of calling friend... More so than that - he was our mate...
In November 2012 he felt unwell and went to see his doctor - a number of tests later, at the age of 25 he was diagnosed with aggressive Bowel Cancer.
Deano fought hard, with his loving wife, Abby, his amazing family - Wayne, Jacqui and Ashy by his side - and the support of his phenomenal group of mates - we thought Dean had beaten the disease and gotten the all clear... Deano was back to his beloved hockey training  and feeling great!

But in April 2013 that feeling was shattered- when a PET scan revealed that his cancer was not only back, but spreading aggressively.
With little treatment options available - Deano battled like a champion until the end...

But on July 21st, 2013 - Dean's battle ended... Just two weeks shy of his 27th birthday...

Our goal is not only to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Australia - but to raise awareness in our generation - this thing isn't just an "old person's" disease.... If you don't feel right - think about Deano... Early detection is key to a good prognosis... And it's better to be safe than sorry when the stakes are so high...

If Deano's legacy can save a life, because someone went and had an uncomfortable conversation with their doctor that they otherwise wouldn't have had - then we feel that it is a positive that we can take from our tragedy...

Please get to know your body, what's normal and what isn't... And if you don't feel right - get it checked out by a physician.

If you would like to donate to our cause - we would greatly appreciate all donations, big or small.
